My Wise Owls will be introduced to and reviewing many different math skills and concepts during the year. The Wise Owls will be using a math program called Ready Math. One of the biggest parts of this program is helping my Wise Owls develop strong mathematical practices. We will be doing this by developing good instructional routines which will help to promote meaningful mathematical discussions in our classroom. At the kindergarten level, these routines need to be explicitly taught. We will start lessons with Individual Think Time where the Wise Owls will be presented with a problem. They will have a short amount of time to think about the problem in order to make sense of it and begin to be able to solve and support their ideas. Next, there will be time for the Wise Owls to Turn and Talk to their partners in order to share their thinking with their partner. Finally, the Wise Owls will make connections between strategies and learn how to apply their thinking to new problems. In short, there will be a lot of discussion focused on mathematical thinking.
In Kindergarten we will be covering all the Illinois State Standards and the Common Core State Standards for Kindergarten. I will be informally assessing progress in mastering all the standards, but we will be assessing the following standards on the report card during the appropriate trimester:
- Identifies numbers to 20
- Writes numbers from 0 - 20
- Counts to 100 by 1s
- Counts to 100 by 10s
- Demonstrates an understanding of one-to-one correspondence and can count up to 20
- Matches the correct numeral to the number of objects
- Sorts and counts objects into groups
- Demonstrates an understanding of greater than, less than, and equal
- Solves addition problems by using objects or drawings
- Solves subtraction problems by using objects or drawings
- Recognizes, describes and extends patterns
- Identifies and builds basic geometric shapes
- Measures using nonstandard units
- Compares the weight and length of objects
- Explains the position of an object in relation to another object
Just as students will be doing iReady Reading, they will also have an iReady Math path. It will work exactly the same as the iReady Reading that was explained on the Literacy page. Please refer to that if you need more information.
